i read that book ages ago and loved it. i didn't realize it had been banned. it inspired a movie, which was good, but not nearly as good as the book of course. it features a young angelina jolie in the part of legs. and jenny lewis is the main character if memory serves me correctly.

Your post was excellent and testament to a teacher who truly understood the role of a teacher. You did the work and formed your opinion. He was receptive and open ... good to have a memory like this.

I'd heard about that, banning of "To Kill a Mockingbird" seriously, i think parents need to give their head a shake and think about priorities... I mean, you can't have rational thinking adults if you keep them ignorant children for the rest of their lives. Kids are smarter than people think.

I love the volleyblog idea - and did you know that Foxfire was later made into a movie with a character played by a quite young angelina jolie?

aside from that - iI think it was 2 years ago, somewhere in the Maritimes? might have been New Brunswick, that "To Kill a Mocking Bird" was censored, and that a school trip to a live performance of the play sparked all kinds of outrage - mostly because - check it out - the story was "discriminatory". This is a classic that first opens the conversation about racism/discrimination and how it is a negatively affecting force that wounds both parties - banned because it was racist.... I shake my head and can only wonder WHO the people on that schoolboard were. It has also been challenged in many states for containing "profanity & racial slurs". Excuse me? have any of these people listened to any lyrics on MTV lately? the radio?

shakes head sadly - time for a smoke, I just get so incensed!

some people just are true educators. i get the feeling that if he hadn't ended up teaching high school english - he probably would have found a way to teach people elsewhere in his life.
Thankfully there ARE a few teachers out there who are like this, who live to open young minds.

Excellent post I can think of numerous teachers throughout my childhood that challenged me to think outside the box. The first, being my parents but I also had one very cool teacher, Mrs. Kyte, that left a huge impact on me. She saw the world differently and always encouraged me to see it that way also.
