TOOL - 10,000 Days Fall Tour 2007

I couldn't believe how great our seats were. We were close enough that i could see the faces of the opening band... Third row from the floor.

The lights went down, and the energy in the stadium instantly peaked. Thousands of fans screamed and applauded as the band took the stage. Me, i had eyes for only him.

He stood at the back of the stage - elevated, with Danny on drums. In front of him was Adam on guitar and on the far side of the stage was Justin on bass. Hanging from the ceiling were screens, and behind the band and directly ON the stage various images, videos, and clips were projected. Their videographer was excellent and they were so tight with thier visual cues. Maynard would often stomp his foot and the images would change....

Please imagine the red and yellow to be images of flames.

Maynard wore his signature cowboy hat, and sunglasses.

The band is sooo tight, and they have to be. Their music is filled with changing time signatures and poly-rhythms, often we'd look and see Justin rocking frantically back and forth while Danny drummed out GOD KNOWS what kind of rhythms.

There were three spotlights on the band.... leaving Maynard in the shadows the entire show. I think it's kinda neat that he wants the fans to focus on the other members, and you do. You totally focus on how hard they are working and how FUCKING hard they are rocking out!

There was no shortage of drugs being had... there was enough pot smoke in the air to get the whole stadium high. (In fact, my house smelled like SkunkTown before we left for the concert... not from smoking it, but from the various people cutting it and rolling it...all told between the 13 people staying at our place that night there were enough joints rolled to please your average touring Funk Band)

I don't remember the set list, B-rad remembers more than i do, i just know that with every song it was as if the energy and intensity of the concert and the fans rose a notch. You could definately tell the Die Hard Tool Fans from the Radio Fans. at varying intervals, the band would leave the stage (for a well deserved break) and there would be projections and ambient noises... the die hards - you could tell - were soaking it all in, every last drop of anything the band gave them... the radio fans were screaming: "MORE!! Do Something!"....they are!!

Finally the moment arrived. They began the first few riffs of "TenThousand Days - Wings for Marie" and i thought my heart would explode.

Here's a bit of background quickly:

Maynard grew up in a southern baptist home, where his step-father was a minister. His mother, Judith Marie, was a devout baptist - and even when she was crippled by a stroke she never once lost her faith or questioned God. Not so for Maynard. There are a few songs written for his mother, one of them is "Judith" that he recorded with the band A Perfect Circle wherein he questions his mother's undying faith: "It's not like you killed someone, it's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side, Praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed, he did it all for you" During the writing period for the album 10,000 Days Maynard's mother died - approx 27 years after having the stroke that left her crippled. (10,000 Days equals roughly 27 years). The song is for his mother, and the part that gets me everytime is: "You're the only one who can hold your head of high, shake your fists at the gate cyring: I've Come Home Now! Fetch me the Spirit, The Son, and the Father! Tell them their pillar of Faith has ascended! It's Time Now! MY Time NOW! Give me my, give me my WINGS!" woo. I get goosebumps just remembering it. (for the
full lyrics to this song go here)

Before playing this song at the concert, Maynard pleaded to the audience to refrain from flash photography. I can only imagine how hard it must be for him to play this song over and over again at each show - which is why i count myself DOUBLY blessed that i saw it live, cuz i doubt they'll ever play it again for any subsequent tours. In my opinion, this song was the best performance of the night. It's difficult not to get swept up in the passion when he sings.

When the concert was over, the band met together on the stage and had a group hug. I love that about them, that they share their love and energy and congratulate themselves. Then Maynard gave a quick wave and left the stage - allowing the rest of the band time to soak in the applause and thundering screams of the fans.

Many times during the night, i was making mental notes of things to remember for my blog - eventually i stopped and let the music take over me. There was no way i'd remember anyway. But i do remember thinking: "This is the greatest show on Earth. How could anyone go to this concert and NOT KNOW that Tool is greatest band on the planet?" so, it must have been really good. lol.

And now i will put away my lust for the Man and the Band (well, on my blog anyway - i still sometimes call b-rad Maynard in bed...tee heee) until the next album, or release, or concert. Thanks for putting up with my school girl obsession. and i'll leave you with this clip of Danny Carey playing drums for the last couple of minutes of "Lateralus" (which they played right after 10,000 Days)...

Turn off the TV, Think for yourself, Question Authority

Love to all of you,

Laura

PS - Here's is a great review of the Saskatoon Concert.

61 - x365 Rand B

You started out as the other man,...the one who stole her heart and kept her in Australia. Out of loyalty to our friend, I think we all held a grudge against you. It wasn't until you two were married and you were living in cowtown and we had a chance to get to know you that we realized that you two are perfect for each other and that your love is deep and strong. Not only are you a cutie patootie, but your Aussie accent and you views on spirituality make you hot. ANNNND...you make a fucking damn fine peanut butter curry!

60 - x365 Cam H

Of all the brothers, i'd say i'm closest to you. When you bought your house and b-rad moved in, i practically lived there too - spending every weekend there. You walked in on me and b-rad having sex once, and since then it seems like nothing else is really that embarassing...i think: "Whatever, he's seen me having sex...what could be worse than that?" Of all the family on B-rad's side you are the most insistant that we start makin' babies. fatherhood hasn't changed you as much as it has your other brothers, but there are moments when i can see your love for your girls in your eyes. THAT makes me want to start.

TT#16 - Google Me

Thirteen Google Searches that brought people to THE DIVA

1. - "Tea Earl Gray Twine" do they make Earl Grey Tea twine? What do you do with that? Do you wrap packages with it? What if it rains, does your package turn all mushy and filled with tea?

2. - "Thank you letter for my brother" i'm guessing they came across the letter for my broski on his birthday. Hope it was helpful.

3. - "Best Dessert Recipe" i was actually googled 3 times for this. If you're hear looking for those recipes... you need to go to this blog post. That's where they is.

4. - "BOOBS EXPLODE" all in caps like that. i wonder what they were actually trying to find, and i'm not sure why they found their way to me... but i hope that my boobs don't explode anytime soon. that would be a tragedy! They're actually quite nice.

5. - "What is the Festivus Dessert" well, if i had to take a stab at it, i'd say ....pudding in a can.

6. - "Knife on the bed" i was googled TWICE for this one, and it makes me shudder....are the creeps who broke into my house googling thier escapades now? is this the NEW videotaping the crime spree trend??

7. - "Tonight's 6/49" sadly i did not win the 6/49. But my friend Paige did... maybe they got our blogs crossed....

8. - "100 Things About Me" Yep. you can find them here.

9. - "I was once a tomboy now am a full grown lesbian bottons" ...uhm.... i'm not exactly sure what bottons are, and i'm a little curious which post this search led them too...

10. - "laura savia" Can you believe it?? Someone searched for ME annnnnd my dearest bloggy pal Savia. did they know that we are interweb soul-sistas?

11. - "diva 24" i'm starting this show on NBC next fall... i play Black Jauer - a No-Holds-Barred-Take-No-Shit-from-Nobody Diva who has to solve the mystery of the mysterious chandelier nuclear bomb. Every episode will be exactly one hour of the story. sounds good, huh?

12. - "Pillows blankets with diva on them" well those are the best kind. I am thinking of creating a line - teaming up with Martha Stewart.

"Our pillows and blankets are 100 percent Egyptian Cotton and breathe in the summer, and keep you warm at night. Each pillow and blanket has a true to life print of the Diva so you can have her with you at all times. These fashionable bed dressings come in Ecru, Eggshell, Offwhite, and White and will suit any decor and room in your house. Act now and we will throw in, free of charge the 'i am the diva' bathrobe...also featuring a true to life print of
the Diva, you cheekymonkey."

13. - "maynard seven" Maynard Seven?? WHAT!?!? does that mean that there are SEVEN of him out there? or that he's the seventh one, like Logan Five in Logan's Run.

59 - x365 Maynard James Keenan

though we've never actually met, you sir, have changed and impacted my life. I admit, freely, that you are my first bonafide Rock Star Crush. Your haunting melodic lines get inside my head, and your ability to make me believe everything you sing by the passion you put into your music excites and inspires me. Yes, i do think you're sexy - but more by the way you move on the stage, and the bad boy image you have going. Seeing you there, in my hometown, knowing you were sleeping somewhere in this city made my heart flutter. I can't imagine my life without you in it.

Seven and Half hours...and we'll be together....

What is this quivering in my loins? Why is my heart beating faster, my blood flowing hotter, my face -it blushes. Butterflies in my stomach... why?

Because I KNOW...that RIGHT NOW...Maynard is here, in this city... possibly only blocks from where i'm sitting right now.

The concert is in 8 hours.

This is the poster for the show.

Each city has it's own unique poster, and they will be selling them at the merch tables, possible even signed ones. I want i want i want i want!!! Me thinks this would make another splendid festivus gift

When i saw them the last two times i was hoping beyond all hope that they would play "10,000 Days - Wings for Marie Part I and II" because it's my fave... but they didn't. I heard later that the 2 shows AFTER the ones i went to, they busted it out.
It just means that when they play it TONIGHT it will be practiced to perfection. Here's a clip for your viewing pleasure... it's a fanmade video of "10,000 Days Wings for Marie part I". Not too shabby, but it doesn't beat the video i have created in my own mind. :D

I'm Coming Maynard!!

58 - Owen H

Look at you. Look at that face, it has chocolate milk and mischief written all over it. Out of all my nieces and nephews, you take the longest to 'warm up'. You have a very serious face, that's why your smiles are so precious. You look a person up and down a few times with that suspicious face before you decide if you like them or not. Your food allergies are always in the forefront, but you have the best mommy and daddy for that. Your new baby brother or sister will be here soon, and i'm excited to see how you will act as a big brother.

57 - x365 Mya H

"Lala....Lalaaaaa.....Baad! Baaad!! BAaaaaaaaaaaddd!!" you've decided you want to talk, but their really more like screams. You can say my name and Uncle B-rad's name.. You can wink. You are your daddy's daughter - spitting image, with your curly blond hair and your big blue eyes. You are a no-frills kinda gal, and would rather spend your birthday in your Riders Jersey than in your new birthday dress. You are my GodDaughter. i've never had a GodChild before, and when your mom and dad asked us to be your GodParents...i looked it up. I said to Uncle B-rad: "it says here that GodParent's are responsible for the spiritual upbringing of their Godchild." we looked at each other and thought: "we're responsible for her SPIRITUAL UPBRINGING!?!?!...ohh boy...."

56 - x365 Maddy H

We welcomed you to the family with open arms and marvelled at how it seemed like you fit right in, like you were meant to be with us. You're a beautiful creature, i feel for your daddy when all three of you start liking boys. Poor Cam. You have a natural talent for movement and you find joy in dancing. You tell stories, and your smile lights up the room. Love you Maddy.

ready for my closeup...

My three nephews...my brother's kids... highlighted in x365.... L-R: Riley, Kenzie, and Kody

55 - x365 Riley M

what will you be when you grow up? where will you go? what will you do? Your big dark eyes and your chicklet smile make it so easy for you to get away with mischief. Of all your brothers, you will be the one to watch for... you're so unpredictable and yet so adorable. When i saw you one sunday - you had an accident... you said to Grandma: "i peed.... here and here and here" as you pointed to your wet pants. And while your mommy talked with you about where the appropriate place to pee is (the toilet) me and your uncle B-rad had a hard time keeping our laughter inside.

Winter is here.... to stay....

I suppose i should be happy that it's held off as long as it has. It seemed that last weekend, the Skatch just decided to be in Winter. All through October and the first half of November, we've had mild weather - and only a few skiffs of snow here and there that melted by mid morning. But last weekend, i guess it had enough screwing around and we have now started the hunkering down process.

i have already started grooming my leg hair crop. i need that extra layer of warmth.

this morning, my car almost refused to start - which means i'll be plugging it in this evening... and i shoveled the walk this morning, clearing away the 2 or 3 inches of fresh snow that fell overnight.

i hate winter.

i mean, it's pretty and all, but it is DAMN cold. Today's high is -24 C, which for my American friends is -11 F. Cold. COLD COLD COLD COLD COOOOOOLLLLLLLLDDDDDD.

and there's something about driving to work in the dark - your internal clock gets all screwed up - and my brain says to me each morning: "What? Get up?? no, it's still dark out you silly thing, we don't wake up in the dark...we wake up in the light!! go back to sleep and wake me in another 2 hours."

i hate winter.

and it's not just the cold and the dark - it's icy streets, and stupid drivers, and slipping in front of my parent's place and hurting my back, and starting the car 15 minutes before going anywhere, and it's bulky winter jackets (although my new jacket is lovely) it's cold ears and runny noses....

but.

i prefer winter to what we had for the last couple of weeks - grey and brown everything. i'd rather have white snow than see everyone's dead grass....

and the countdown to TOOL is upon me.... they will be here... in my town....tomorrow night. i love you maynard.

It's been a while...

But the Grey Cup has finally returned to the Skatch!!

For those of you who don't know, the Grey Cup is to the CFL what the SuperBowl is to the NFL.

And our Riders won!!

Go Green!

I admit that i am a Bandwagon Jumper On-er... But i say, how the hell else are they supposed to grow their fanbase if i'm not jumping on their wagon?

I don't watch Football, ordinarily.  But watching these last couple of games - i think it's a sport i might be able to get into.

and now that i have a 'team' to support again, i just might.  we'll see.

54 - x365 Eric H

Blue eyed blond, you will break hearts.  Cute little dimples and trouble with your 'r's.  You remind of a Homestar Runner, in a very sweet way.  It used to be that you were never too busy for hugs - but you're getting older, little man, and i know that the hugs will someday stop.  And that's okay.  You're following in your daddy's footsteps - and hockey is on the horizon for you.

Big tough guy, you make me laugh, but i know that you're still my little buddy and always will be.
