I am soo sorry that happened to you both. Being victimized is deeply unsettling, infuriating and costs much more than the (substantial) lost possessions.

I hope you have all the time you need to be together right now.

Not to freak you out, but don't replace the expensive stuff they took for at least two weeks and maybe a month. Thieves come back to get the new stuff that's better than what they took the first time.

And what helped me after I had two break-ins in two weeks? I rearranged my furniture. I sewed myself new curtains. I got a new blanket for my bed. Re-own your space. Take it back.

I'm thinking of you guys.

In a little while it'll be okay, remember it's just stuff. Stuff can be replaced, I know the sentimental stuff can't be, but at least your house wasn't trashed and you and your kitties were okay. Let me know if you need anything, don't let SGI screw you around either.

deb,
thank you. we're workin on it.

schmutzie,
yeah, that's a good point. we'll keep that in mind. right now, the only thing i'm concerned with is getting a new door on the house. with a deadbolt.
also, good idea about re-owning. i think i'll make some new cushion covers. Fuck those bastards.

paige,
so far so good, Kessler is being as helpful as they possibly can.

house breaking theives are simply bastards. very little else that can go worng with where you live is worse. even knowing who the theives are is better.

when you replace the door - get a steel reinforced once with the deadbolt. the Restore is usually pretty good with them.

and when you reown, you might want to get smoe sweetgrass and have a small purification ceremony.

last but not least - schmutzie is right - you might want to sign up for a security service for 6 months or so. just make sure there aren't any early termination charges hidden in the contract. For $30 month it's worth it just for peace of mind.

love y'all and sending all good things your way.

They are a pain the ass, but a house alarm system is a pretty fucking strong deterrent. Well-placed signs on the lawn announcing it as well.

Goddamn Muthafuckas!

There's a pretty good chance they won't come back when they see that your castle has become more of a fortress, methinks. I certainly think they'll be tempted to come back but they gotta know that you're totally going to secure the heck outta your house.

And yes, nothing sez "You can't kick me in" like a deadbolt.

I'd say this is a pretty sad state of affairs, living in a world like this but really... it's always been this way - no matter the century you're born into.

This just irritates me to no end. Why do these things always happen to the nicest people? You don't deserve it. And that Calvin & Hobbes strip always hit the nail on the head for me. (Bill Watterson is a fricking genius).

The biggest thing I did for myself after my break in was buy my own place and install an alarm system before I even moved in.

It makes me feel so much better, and it means that when thievies are staking out the HoodLite, they skip over my place and go for the easier targets.

Also, I had a "distress code" put into the system so that if anyone forces you to punch in your code, you put this code in instead and it notifies the police to come right away.

I know it doesn't guarantee that no one will break in, but it makes it possible for me to sleep at night, that's for sure.

That would sum it up pretty good. Good ol Calvin & Hobbes. Knew I liked them for a good reason!

Hope it went well yesterday. Call if you need anything.
